There's no telling just how low a female celebrity will be prepared to go when it comes to getting herself noticed on the red carpet.

In the case of Jennifer Aniston, the answer is: very low indeed.

Last week, the star wore a metallic silver mini-dress to an awards ceremony that was slashed so deeply at the front (as shown in the picture below) that her belly button was in danger of catching cold.

She’s the latest in a long line of famous women to embrace the eye-catching and very risque fashion for ‘extreme cleavage’ dresses.

Ms Aniston certainly grabbed the headlines, but did she get the look right? Some commentators suggested that, at the age of 42, Jen had fallen into the mutton-dressed-as-lamb trap. Possibly, but when that mutton happens to be just as attractive as the lamb, why not show it off?

No, the problem with her dress is nothing to do with age-appropriateness. It’s all down to the fact that it breaks all the rules of extreme cleavage.

The most important plunging neckline commandment is that if your bosom is on display, everything else must be covered up. Flashing the flesh works only if you do just that — flash it, don’t put the whole lot on display.

Then there’s the issue of fake tan. A red carpet gown often demands a bit of a glow (unless you’re deliberately working that January Jones alabaster skin thing), but a large expanse of fake-baked flesh not only cheapens the outfit, it also ages the wearer. Jennifer definitely went too far with the bronzer.

And should you be brave enough to consider an extreme cleavage, it’s important not to make the look too fussy with over-enthusiastic embellishment and accessories. The plunge itself should provide all the excitement you need.

Her daughters are socialites in the making, but proud mother Sarah Ferguson hasn't exactly done their street cred much good.

The Duchess of York and former wife of Prince Andrew was spotted at LAX clutching her favourite bag with her children's faces emblazoned on it.

Fergie showcased the item in June during a day out in New York while she was in the Big Apple promoting her new book Finding Sarah.

The black and white handbag, which features an image of the two sisters, was designed by Anya Hindmarch for a cool £225.

Stepping out with a rather playful beehive hairdo, the mother-of-two braved the paparazzi glare by going without shades.

She also opted to go au natural, forfeiting any help from the contents of her make-up bag.

Draped over her arm was a garment carrier, which no doubt was protecting the gown she intends to wear at her latest charity event.

Fergie was making her way to Sunnyvale, California, for her first official public appearance at the 2011 Global Forum on Human Trafficking.

She is due to attend the black-tie event where the audience will include Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The 52-year-old recently moved across the Atlantic to sunny LA for a 'fresh start'.

It is here that flame-haired Fergie filmed her six-part series which documents her emotional struggle to rebuild her life.

She is reportedly being paid £200,000 to bare her soul on the show, due to be broadcast in Britain later this year.

Louis Walsh was faced with sending one of his own acts home tonight as Kitty Brucknell and Sami Brookes fought for survival in the bottom two.

The X Factor stars battled each other, with Brucknell's rendition of Lady Gaga's The Edge Of Glory triumphing over Brookes' version of Aretha Franklin hit A Natural Woman.

Walsh's decision proved unpopular with the studio audience, as he was greeted with boos.

Gary Barlow said both acts were 'unbelievable' and credited Sami for her vocals, although it was obvious who he was going to save having previously called her 'karaoke' and 'a cruise ship singer'.

The Take That star said: 'Sami, your voice is undeniable but I've always found you a little bit dated.'

Kelly also saved Kitty, 26, adding: 'This is really hard. Sami, I absolutely adore you and Kitty I think you're a wonderful entertainer, but I'm sending home Sami.'

Tulisa spiced up the vote by opting to send Kitty home, saying: 'I've got to vote with my heart and the person I most connect with, so the act I'm sending home is Kitty.'

This meant that if Louis had chosen to save Sami, Dermot O'Leary would've had to go to deadlock, where the phone-in figures are the deciding factor as the contestants have two votes each.

Walsh said: 'I love both girls, but Kitty, you're not connecting with the public for some reason. Sami, you were incredible, you sang your heart out. Do I go with my head? Do I go with my heart?

'I'm going to go with my heart and the person I'm going to have to send home is Sami.'

The 31-year-old had the last word, saying: 'I may not be able to sell a million albums, but I am going to sing for the rest of my life.'

At the beginning of the show, the opening group ensemble was notably missing, immediately sparking speculation on Twitter that contestants can't stand being in the same room long enough to practice.

In reality, it was most likely due to the fact there were three star guests, including American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, Professor Green featuring Emeli Sandi and Bruno Mars.

Louis also apologised for last night's antics, when he accused Misha B of bullying contestants.

He swallowed a large dose of humble pie, telling host Dermot: 'We're all so involved in our own acts, but I got a bit carried away.

Following his lead, Tulisa also backtracked from her accusations, having previously said Misha's backstage attitude was turning sour.

In what appeared to be rather scripted, she told Dermot that 'Misha stole the show', but her face told a different story.

Marcus Collins was announced as the first act returning next week, saving his nerves from turning to shreds again after he was the final artist to be called last Sunday.

Despite the dramas last night, Misha B was the second act to be saved, with Johnny Robinson, Rhythmix, Janet Devlin and Craig Colton jumping for joy as Dermot called their name.

The Risk were saved until last before Sami and Kitty were revealed as the bottom two.

Comedian Rory Bremner tonight admitted he nearly wept as he told his children he had got the boot from Strictly Come Dancing, saying: 'I feel like I let them down.'

The 50-year-old star went head to head with Nancy Dell’Olio after both got the lowest amount of public votes.

But it was famed impressionist Bremner who got the push from the BBC ballroom hit after being accused of having 'flat feet' following his Cha cha cha with partner Erin Boag.

Bremner, who is married to artist Tessa Campbell Fraser, told the Daily Mail that he was most worried about upsetting his daughters Ava, nine, and seven-year-old Lila.

He said: 'I’m very sad, I had to come home and tell my children. They were so excited after watching Saturday’s show and I had to take them in a corner and tell them that it was over.

'I have a lump in my throat, I do feel I let them down, but I get it my best shot.'

When asked why he thought Miss Dell’Olio, 50, had managed to cling on to safety for yet another week – after being in the bottom two for two weeks running – Bremner admitted: 'Nancy is fantastically entertaining.

'When she dances with Anton, it’s like watching a driving lesson.

'She’s an extraordinary force of nature and she is good at what she does.

The Colombian actress flaunted her amazing curves in a tiny black bikini while holidaying in Mexico.

She tweeted a picture of herself in the barely-there two piece before leaving the picturesque spot where she has been staying with boyfriend Nick Loeb.

She can be seen standing poolside at the One&Only Palmilla Resort, in Los Cabos, in the south of the country.

The mother-of-one has her arm above her head, clutching her sunglasses with her flat stomach and toned legs on display.

She wrote: 'Ciao ciao One&Only Palmilla !!! It was amazing!! Te quiero [I love you] Mexico.'
